Below is an excerpt from my HDR travel blog. Cheers.
The idea of a museum in today’s day and age seems a bit silly. As I walked through the many exhibits of the New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, I wondered why on Earth I paid money (its voluntary by the way) to fight through hoards of tourists to see a piece of artwork that often looks more impressive in an art book than in real life. I’m always amused at how small Seurat’s, ‘A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte’ actually is when you see it in person. Every piece of artwork around the world can be seen free in today’s day and age on the Internet in the confines of your own peaceful home. Why fight the crowds?
Aside from the novelty of seeing artwork firsthand, the most peculiar sociological phenomenon can be found in museums. Humans are funny creatures. If you watch human behavior in a museum they tend to follow the masses. Whether or not the painting is popular or not, if enough people are standing in front of it, 10 more people will show up eager to know the photo is drawing a crowd. A few will even snap a photo in fear of missing a famous painting that they are unaware of. For the most part, human behavior in a museum can be attributed to following the masses and what is popular (regardless if they really enjoy it or not, or understand it for that matter).
Andy Warhol loved phenomenons such as the one described above. His artwork is enshrined throughout the Met Museum for exploiting and exposing this type of human behavior. He challenged the notion of what exactly is art, how we view it as a society and why we choose one piece of artwork over another. Artwork is like any popular trend in the world. ‘Once you "got" Pop, you could never see a sign the same way again…. The moment you label something you take a step – I mean, you can never go back again to seeing it unlabeled." – Andy Warhol. We all too often follow the what is perceived as ‘cool’ in our society. The artwork in a museum and people’s behavoir towards it is no different.
Sorry for the long write up. Above is Rembrandt’s self portrait hanging in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
drawing ideas, tracing dreams (16/52)

El tema propuesto para esta semana era más bien abierto: Capturar "el momento" de una actividad creativa a elegir, como la pintura, la cocina, la escritura… Al final yo me decidí por sacar un instante de mi trabajo habitual, hacer planos.
The suggested theme for this week it was more open: Capture "the moment" of a creative activity to choose, such as painting, cooking, writing … At the end I decided to take a instant from my usual work, make drawings.
