Better lives through better farming

Saidi Yitu stands in a field outside his family’s house in the Tanzanian village of Mkambarani. His family’s crop yields have increased dramatically since first purchasing maize seed from Tanseed, a program of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa. Surplus bags of maize harvested from their family’s farm last year have helped them build a new house, which is still being constructed. (Morogoro, Tanzania, 2009)

Sabre-Rattling in Shoreditch

Practice makes perfect…we watched a dozen recruits being put through their paces today in a fast track session at the Met Art Police’s new HQ and training centre in Shoreditch, London.
There was palpable excitement in the air as the young officers completed the final stage of their training this afternoon and were evaluated for their speed and accuracy on an actual piece…the new ER logo at the main entrance to the facility.
Apparently a representative from Team Robbo came along this morning to teach the recruits some core writing skills and to introduce a few advanced techniques such as speed writing, formation and composite sorties. The recruits can expect to go solo after about 10 hours total training and successful officers may then also complete a small Team Robbo accredited package which makes them eligible for the award of a private writer’s licence.
We are looking forward to seeing the outcome of these new cooperations.
With thanks to the Met’s official photographer Adam NFK Smith, for letting us publish one of his photos.

We had our first Share Tompkins community swap meet on May 21st in Ithaca. Here’s the description we sent out:
Like sharing? Have skills? Bring goods and services you’d like to share, and you’ll be able to barter, give away or sell your offerings to other community members. The more we can provide for one another locally, the closer we are to sustainability!
What to bring:
- Food and Produce: veggies, teas, baked goods, jams, tofu, etc.
- Body Care: tinctures, soaps, creams, etc.
- Handmade Crafts: ceramics, candles, art, etc.
- Stuff: electronics, housewares, tools, books, etc.
- Services: massage, bike repair, web design, accounting, etc.
- Labor: shoveling, hauling, planting, etc.
- Bags, boxes and carts to take stuff home in
Feel free to also bring potluck dishes and refreshments that can be shared during the swap meet!
Guidelines:
- Our goal is sustainability – please bring stuff that is locally-grown or made from local materials if possible.
- Please limit what you bring to what you can fit in a lap-sized box – you can always arrange for pick-up after the meeting.
- Be prepared to take back home with you whatever you don’t end up bartering or giving away.
- Please bring stuff that is in good condition or can be easily-repaired – no junk!
Brought to you by the newly formed Share Tompkins!
